...because fiction has to make sense.

This just in: Today was a bit surreal. What do I mean? Let me tell you a couple of wee true stories.

1) Just after my break at work I arrived back at my desk to see an IM from my husband which stated: "I had a parrot put a quarter on my shoe :)"
As you can imagine, I blinked a few times before replying: ???

Him: parrot
Him: quarter
Him: shoe
Him: :D

The conversation went on rather in this same vein (read: like pulling teeth) until I finally got some of the story out of him. He told me: "I was standing in line to order food, and a parrot on the ground walked over with a quarter in her mouth and put it on my shoe."

No, he wasn't at Long John Silver's. I asked. Nor did he say thank you to the kind bird...as he was trying to order and not laugh. I also managed to glean the fact that the clerk didn't even mention the parrot. (Common occurrence at this non-pirate related eatery?) The parrot had come along with some guy or other...who I suppose didn't care if it was wandering about distributing quarters. And what became of said quarter? My dear hubby put it back on the ground, and the parrot picked it up and walked away.

I feel a new family term coming on to add to the glossary. Perhaps bizarre occurrences may now be referred to in this manner: "Yes, but did a parrot put a quarter on your shoe?"

I'll have to think on it. But this is only one story from today.

2) Before my morning meeting, I received an email...requesting the use of one of my poems for a podcast. O.O

As you may imagine, I stared a the computer in disbelief and read the email a couple of times. Then I came over all: Hey! Someone likes my poem!

Apparently they found it on SoundCloud. I knew I liked that site.

This is the poem in question:

After my meeting, I downloaded the most recent episode of the podcast. It's called: The Jackass-Penguin Show's Jazzy Selections, "A down-to-earth compact selection of instrumental jazzy tracks by independent artists." (If you like the modern jazzy sound, you should give it a listen.)

So...I said yes.

Eep.

2a) Apparently my little sister was on the news this last weekend? She was doing a run to support a women's shelter. My sister is cool. That much is at least not strange.

Today's acronym is: IBoEE, which stands for: the International Bank of Everyone Else.

Definition: Let's say that you are having lunch with friends, and it comes time to divvy up the check. Your friends all have cash, but you haven't been to the ATM lately. Whatever are you to do? Well, you pay the whole bill with a credit card, and your friends give you their cash. Now, you don't need to find an ATM, because you've been to the International Bank of Everyone Else (IBoEE).

...And here's another post about a piece of paper I saved...

From the Cork Board:

From the Forgotten English day by day calendar - Tuesday, March 16 (year?)

Banting: doing banting, reducing superfluous fat by living on [a] meat diet, and abstaining from beer, farinaceous food, and vegetables, according to the method adopted by William Banting....The word was introduced about 1864.
- Ebenezer Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, 1898

Why I saved it:

Uh...sound familiar? Everything old is new again, isn't it Mr. Atkins? *ahem*

(I'm sure that most of you folks know the first definition (below), but I've included it in the interest of completeness.)

And now, a spot of education.

"Rickrolling is a prank and Internet meme involving the music video for the 1987 Rick Astley song "Never Gonna Give You Up" ... The meme is a classic bait and switch: a person provides a link they claim is relevant to the topic at hand, but the link actually takes the user to the Astley video. The URL can be masked or obfuscated in some manner so that the user cannot determine the true source of the link without clicking (and thus satisfying their curiosity). By extension, it can also mean playing the song loudly in public in order to be disruptive. A person who falls for the prank is said to have been "Rickrolled"." - Rickroll Wikipedia Article

Random Access Brain is the sort of brain that will randomly pop ideas into your head when you are busy doing something else. It will remind you of that time in kindergarten that you were learning the letter A, and do this for no apparent reason. It will take unrelated concepts and create new ideas out of them. Sometimes it will do this in the most inappropriate of circumstances. Worse yet, sometimes the ideas are funny.

Random Access Brain on Shuffle is when the RAB decided to start playing music. Generally it is something completely unexpected like the Gilligan's Island theme or just the chorus of your favorite song from third grade.

You could be sitting at work, minding your own business, trying to remember that new band name you came up with the other day...that you forgot to write down. (Was it something to do with donuts?) And just when you think that you've got it, your RABoS starts playing "Never Gonna to Give You Up."

And that's how it's possible to Rickroll yourself.

In my family, and among my close friends, we have come up with many words and phrases that can only be understood by those in the know. So, I'm putting you wise.

big_chicken.jpg

Word/Phrase: Chicken Poetry

Origin: Even the origin of this phrase needs some background. I am a Librarian. My parents are (er, were...they're retired now...mostly) also librarians. Anyway, once upon a time my Father was working on the Reference Desk and he was approached by a patron with a reference question. It sounded like this patron was looking for Chicken Poetry. So, my Father searched. He consulted databases. He looked in books. All sorts of of research later, it came to light that that patron had, in fact, meant "Chicken Poultry." Le sigh.

Meaning: An interesting reference question.

Usage: Did you get any chicken poetry at work today?

Image Source: Answers.com (I used this picture of the Big Chicken for three reasons: 1) I couldn't find my picture, 2) I like the Big Chicken, and 3) It was more fun than just a pic of a Chicken.)

pinkpantsinterpunk.gif

Word/Phrase: Pink Pants

Origin: Once upon a time, when my sister was young, she went shopping with my mother. While they were out, she set her eyes on something she decided that she had to have. It was a pair of pink pants. Sadly, no matter how much she begged, Mum wouldn't buy her those pants. (She has never heard the end of this.)

Meaning: Something you wanted but never got to have, as you were prevented for some reason.

Usage: I always wanted to spend a semester abroad in college, but it's totally pink pants. We couldn't afford it.
or

Argh! I always wanted to go to Space Camp. Pink Pants! Pink Pants!

Consider yourselves informed.
(Oh, and the pink pants in question would have been smaller than those shown. These came from Interpunk. I just liked the picture.)
